Rewind: Colton and Meg’s Wedding Portraits

You wanna know blown away?  It’s having a friend call you on the phone and say her daughter likes your photos and then ask you to fly across the country.

I always liked Meg before her wedding.  She was a fun, creative, intelligent woman with a crazy, wacky side I could totally relate to.  Preparing to take her photos though? I grew to love her more than ever.  And I began to look forward to taking the pictures of her special day because I just knew she’d be loads of fun.

We talked about where to shoot pictures at, and we finally decided to use the Mesa LDS Temple grounds.  Colton and Meg did not get married there last year but this year they were sealed for their first anniversary.  Rock on you, two.  This is for you for eternity!

Because they weren’t getting married there, we decided we didn’t want to make the photographs Temple-centric which meant we needed to get real creative.  After arriving, I realized there was no creativity needed.  The Temple grounds are like this amazing park.  So much beauty everywhere you turn.  I hope I get to go back out there for pictures again.

We started out by a reflecting pool.  The fun thing here was we were working around some sweet 16 portraits.  Now let me tell you, I never thought to do Sweet 16 at a Temple, but it rocks to me!  And these kids? Oh man were they just totally beautiful all dolled up.  We tried to stay out of their way and I let Colton and Meg just be the sweet newlyweds of five minutes that they were.

I wanted to make sure they had something with the Temple in the background, but we also wanted to remain honest.  I thought looking through the gate made it speak towards their goal to get inside someday.  From the reaction of the guy just inside the gate, I’m not so sure many people take pictures on this side of the gate.  It only took me standing in the middle of the street, so I’m not sure what the problem was!

Now you can’t go to Arizona and not get some cactus pictures.  OK, well I can’t.  I happen to think cacti are cool plants.  They have a beauty that is unique.  Maybe it’s just because I miss living in Arizona.  Of course, going into this little patch, poor Meg got attacked by one of the prickly suckers! Ooops!

We found a nice bench for the two to take a break on.  Meg just resting on her beloved.  I love the look in his eyes!

IMG_5824 IMG_5836-1

Letting the two rest in the shade in the cool grass brought about some very tender moments.  It was only about 108 and blazing hot under the harsh Arizona sun.  Yeah, and she’s wearing that giant white gown and he’s in a full tux.  I love a summery wedding and all, but do you ever wonder why it is we actually CHOOSE to subject ourselves to such fancy clothes in such heat?  Love it but man do you start to want to melt!

But after taking a break, we decided to walk around to the back side of the Temple.

Me? I like to see newlyweds kiss.  And kiss.  And REALLY kiss!

IMG_5939 IMG_5936 IMG_5909

Cause you are married now.  So go for it!

IMG_5880

We found this bench and I let them have some more time while I plotted.  You see… a little birdie filled me in.  Oh yes.

And so I asked them.  With a chuckle they nodded and we decided to go for it.

IMG_5955

The first time we failed, but it made for a really wonderful photo.  But in the end…

IMG_5959

Oh yeah.  Colton can benchpress his bride.  Even with the crazy heavy dress throwing off her center of balance.  Now you tell me that guy isn’t hiding a cape under that tux? You know he is.  Colton, you are obviously Superman! That so rocks!

I know. That’s cool.  Right?

And did you see their shoes? I love it.  Saddle shoes and wingtips. I told you. I love this couple!

IMG_5979 IMG_5965

Ahhh, young love.  It’s so precious.  You can look at their faces and see that unconditional love as well as the hopes and dreams of where their life will lead.  With every couple I watch get married, I just hope that they can find a way to keep that.  To hold on to it.  To never ever let it go.

Hopefully I’ll get to go out to Arizona again sometime.  I had so much fun!  And I’d LOVE to be able to see Meg and Colton and everyone else again.

Meg, Colton? I love you two crazy kids.  You two rock!  Thanks for letting me share in your special day.  And for about the zillionth time, congrats on your recent first anniversary and your trip to the Temple.  If ever anyone deserves eternity? It’s you!  Oh and btw, I love reading your blog and looking at pictures at your dogs!  How about some new pix going up soon so I can show my dog?

Rewind Monday: Meg and Colton Get Married

I’m continuing this little Rewind Extravaganza by showing that lovely bride, Meg, at her beautiful ceremony.

The day before a local church in Mesa got the fairy godmother treatment by a flock of friends.  A normal church became a fairy tale wonderland.  And yeah, I’m totally jealous.  Wish I knew creative people like this when I had a shindig to throw.  Think someone will come to VA next time I’m involved in shindiggery?

Meg and her dad prepare for the walk Meg would remeber for the rest of her life.

Colton’s first glimpse of his bride – a moment I love to capture.  Grooms get all gooey the first time they see their bride all dolled up.  I think it is because they know that she finally looks like they way they see her all the time.  She’s gorgeous, she’s glowing, she’s in the most beautiful dress imagined.  And in only a few short minutes… she’s gonna be his. Forever.

I love the look of Dad as he walks Meg down the aisle…

The Vows.

Their first kiss… Can you feel the heat?

IMG_5679

They can’t keep their hands off each other.  Remember that feeling?  It makes me melty to see couples with their hands together.

Meg, surrounded by her court after the ceremony as she shows off her newly ringed hand.

Wait till tomorrow… I’m gonna show you some portraits that are to die for.  They really show off Meg and Colton as the superheros they are.  He’s her Superman and she’s his Supergirl.

Weekend Rewind: Before the Flake Wedding

Last year I got to fly to Arizona for the wedding of a family friend.  I don’t even know how long I’ve known, Nedra (or her daughter through the association), but I feel like we are absolutely family.  Sometimes family comes from blood, and sometimes it comes from strong ties of friendship.

Nedra’s daughter, Meg, met her soulmate and in May 2008 they got married.  They wanted me to come out and figured I could pull double duty as guest and photographer.  I was, admittedly, blown away by the request.  That anyone would want me to fly from DC to AZ to shoot a wedding is a little breathtaking!

But as I say, I love to travel!  And I love to take photos!  It was my absolute pleasure, especially since Meg and Colton are just so fun!

Another little tidbit… Meg might be younger than me, and of no blood relation, but I swear we are like soul twins.

Of course, my life being what it was… I ended up with about 18 tons of drama all surrounding the time of the wedding, but everything worked out in the end.  At least I had the beauty and highlight of the wedding to keep me going through life’s insanity!

I thought I’d focus a few entries on their wedding.  Mostly because the photos make me happy, but also because I’m wrapping up my brother-in-law’s reception photos, but am not quite ready to post the new work.

Today I’m posting the “Bride’s Room Photos.”  Some people don’t really know what is involved in that.  Every bride is like a princess with her cluster of girl friends flocking to her.  The room they are getting ready in is filled with laughter, crying, memories, and dreams.  I like to capture just a little of that.

IMG_5329

Sometimes people just get a little goofy.  I love it when people make faces!

IMG_5346

One of Meg’s bridesmaid’s gets ready.  I loved the dresses Meg chose!

IMG_5358

Of course there’s always fixing the hair just right so the veil can go on!  I always love to see the veil go on!

IMG_5385 IMG_5432 IMG_5417

There’s more friend photo ops, lacing up the gown, and putting on jewelry.  It’s almost like Cinderella getting ready for the ball.  And I just love to be there… taking the photos… hearing the stories… joining in the merriment.

IMG_5456-2 IMG_5457 IMG_5447

Meg really makes a smashing bride.  I’m never tired of seeing a bride glowing and thoughtful and just so ready to go marry her Prince Charming.

IMG_5481 IMG_5517

The most touching moment is seeing Dad as he hugs his princess, knowing he’s about to turn her over to another… Dad’s held her in his arms when she was a baby and watched her grow and blossom into the woman he holds in his arms.  I love that song where the guy sings about dancing with Cinderella… and that’s what I hear when I look at this picture!

I hope you enjoyed seeing a little bit of a story of one bride getting ready for her wedding day.  I’m such a sappy romantic I’m ready to cry just remembering it. Yeah. Cause I’m THAT dork. It’s probably a good thing I’m always busy taking photos!!
