Tilt White House

I went to meet with a client getting married next Spring today. They are fantastic and watching them interact on an informal level was a real treat. I’ve already started coming up with some ideas that to me will hopefully speak of their coolness. It’s what I like to do… I want photos to speak to the personality of people!

It’s probably the writer in me.

Well, the groom asks me if I saw this site… it warps your pictures ever so slightly so they end up looking like model train sets. Cool. Oh you know I’m going to be trying to find something specific to shoot for this. Oh yeah.

But, until then, I went digging through some photos trying to find something that would be pretty darn groovy. And also be something that is also me.

I live in the vast area of land known as “The Greater DC Area.” Probably the only place where you can meet someone and claim to be neighbours while living 90 miles apart. What can I say? We’re nutty out here in DC.

Which meant… it just HAD to be DC. And I found a picture of The White House. Well of COURSE I had to use it! DUH! It’s me! And why not do weird and crazy things to a photograph of the White House?

Ooooh yeah. That’s sweet.

That is all, really. I’m just about done with the big event from last week. I’m in the home stretch. Tomorrow night I am going to the rehearsal for Saturday’s wedding. After Saturday I am going to be swamped, but I’ll see what I can fit in for posts. Unfortunately most of next week’s work is personal stuff around the house I’ve let slide. No fun. I’d rather be photogging!

Panorama-mania!

In May I took a personal trip with the kids to the Baltimore Inner Harbour.  We totally hijacked the husband’s business trip and did a ton of walking and sight seeing.  Talk about a load of fun!

Well, on our little adventure to walk from the Harbour (basically from beside the Orioles ballpark) to Fort McHenry (so not 2 miles – try FIVE! ONE WAY!) we got to the top of this hill and had this beautiful view of the water.  I wanted to melt from the coolness of it all!

I’ve tried to do panorama’s in the past but only half heartedly.  I know I did everything wrong since I didn’t even have a tripod or a beanbag but figured “Eh, why not?”

So I snapped off a few shots standing in place and figured one day when I had time, I’d fiddle.  Well, not that I really have time these days, but I started fiddling last night.  Mostly because the big long loads of work event I did last week needed me to do the same sort of technique you use on panorama pictures.  I figured Baltimore had to be about a zillion times easier than trying my first real attempt on pictures with a total of like 170 teenagers.  See, sometimes I can use my brain!  Aren’t you proud?

Well… here’s what I learned.  1. I need a macbook if I ever want to do something like this on a laptop again.  HAHA 2. Woah, it’s fun!  And with proper software (seriously the last time I tried this was with an Elph and some stitching software that was confusing as all get out) it’s not too hard.  There’s some fine tuning and whatnot, but that’s not so bad, right?  To be expected?  Yeah, I thought so.

I fell asleep at the laptop last night working on this.  I woke up this morning (Dudes, of course I got up at some point and went to bed! Geeze! I’m not that much of a glutton for punishment for my art!) and got back to work.  Now, I put this in really small just so you don’t have to scroll for years…

Whatcha think?  It’s not perfect, but I think I did a pretty bang up job!  I love it!  I’m sitting here going “No JS, you don’t need to send it off to print.  No you don’t.  Stop.  You don’t.”

I think I need to. Where on earth would I put this though? Hmmm.  And how much would it cost?

I better go find other work to do.  Before I spend the rest of my photo money on some crazy size picture of Baltimore!

BTW – I’m lonely… message me!  Leave me a comment and tell me what you think!  Yeah… I’m an attention-monster.  I know!  But you love me anyway!

A quick spin through DC

My husband has a project in San Jose that he flies to frequently. Sunday afternoon he needed to go to National so we hopped in the car for a nice little DC drive. I hate going to DC on the afternnon of a weekend because traffic is just so questionable.

As luck would have it, we hit great traffic! Which also meant we left far too early and got to the airport with an hour and fifteen minutes to spare.

So? We did a little drive through of DC. It was just so beautiful I hung out the window like the great big dork that I am and snapped some photos. Photogging while driving down the street? Yeah it’s sorta mixed results. (FYI for safety: He was driving, I was photogging!)

I thought you might like a little peek at what I got, which I have to admit I’m dang impressed with. Go me! What makes me really go “SQUEEE” is that I was just back in the District yesterday taking portraits of a dear friend and her FREAKING CUTE boys. If those pictures are half this awesome? Oh baby, yeah!

Nice shot of the Washington Monument!

We drove by the water. I wanna go sailing! How cool would it be to sail around here? We were within sight of the monuments!

We headed back out of the city and I grabbed this one of Jefferson.

That just says it all about me. I do love to travel! I always hate leaving cool places though so I snapped a picture of me taking a picture with DC receding as we crossed the bridge back into VA!

I’m so glad I went back to DC yesterday. I can’t wait to show off photos! As a bonus, I took Joram so there will be pix of my friend and her kids and then pix of my kid! (Or maybe I should torment her and post Joram’s first? Whatcha think? Eh, she loves me so she’d put up with the torment! HA!)

I love ya, DC!

Joram – Everyday

My kids tend to be my test subjects for weird photo ideas or new photo plans.  Lucky for me, they roll with it.  It’s good for me because I like to shoot pictures of them.  Ok, and it gives me great practice for days like today where I got to go take photographs of two kids.  Wait till you see THOSE pictures.  Watch for them next week.  Let’s just say: Dad’s uniforms for a little dress up fun!

Back to my kids, though.  I got a recent photography magazine in the mail and it was talking about senior portraits.  End of the school year brings those into play.  I don’t know about you, but when I was in school we had two choices.  Get the crummy school photographer take boring pictures of us in that drape thingy (I’m a girl… what did they use for the guys? Was that a full suit jacket and shirt?) or spend fat stacks of cash and get creative photos where we could make them very personal.

I opted for Plan B.  At the time I was still an active dancer so I chose to wear my ballet black and pink with a dance skirt and my toe shoes.  I loved those photos.  They were the first photos in 17 years that I thought were not only decent, but showed who I was.

Probably why I like to use a more photojournalistic style today.  I like to capture the heart of my subjects rather than use stiff poses.

Well, we hopped into the van to go somewhere and I chucked the magazine at the kids in the backseat.  I told them to look through and if they saw anything they liked, to let me know.  I’d use them for some summer portraits to practice the whole “senior” thing.

Joram saw some person on a swing and loved it.  He asked if I would do that for him.  Sure, I said.

I know you guys are avid fans of my blog, right?  So you saw my little niece of cuteness on the swing at my inlaws?  Well you guessed right, I took care of photographing Joram on the same swing!

Doesn’t he look like he’s having fun?  He’s already asked for prints for his bedroom.  I think it’s time to seriously contemplate what to do to decorate that room.  Hey, I have a start!

Joram’s also become our little lawn mower.  We only have a push mower so that involves some whining, but Pop-Pop is cool with a riding mower.  Joram was tickled to mow the front lawn.  Wearing the lawn hat was a great bonus.  The light was a bit harsh when the photo was taken plus it just doesn’t seem quite right to me that he’s old enough for such a task – which I tried to capture with the camera.  That, and the love he had of this chore.

So there you have a little more insight into our lives and some pictures of my kids to tide you over until next week.  I’ve got some great posts coming up!  Until then have a great 4th of July if you are in America, otherwise just have a great weekend!

Monday Rewind – Spring Photos!

I never really debuted the Spring photos of my kids.  Not officially, at any rate.

What I love about my kids is they have come to know – Mom just takes photos.  Of everything.  Anytime I see something new, I make the kids let me try it out.  Seeing as though they put me through a lot… I feel I should at least give them some options for their portraits from time to time.

This spring we chose to photograph music in the making, our new yard, and reading.  Three passions that the boys enjoy tremendously!

The most important member of our family insisted that he be posted first.  Considering he rules the house, I decided it was better to give in, lest he go for the ankles.  I’m sure he’d take the time away from stalking his nemesis, the Evil Racoon, to teach me a lesson in disobedience!

Nephi  is fierce.  Nephi is a great Chihuahua Warrior. Fear him.  Then scratch his ears and praise his bravery!

I chose to use Caramon’s reading photo because I loved the lighting. It has nothing to do with his choice of reading material… not at all.  After all, I don’t have a thing for the Oz series do I?  Pay no attention to the name on my license plate…

Joram’s come a long way with his guitar and I’m proud of him.  For that matter, Caramon and I have gotten better as well.  The new keyboard plan seems to work wonders for encouraging practice there, too.  I got this picture of Joram strumming on his guitar and loved it.

Finally, I managed to grab a shot of the boys with Nephi for school in the front yard.  We LOVE school outside!

We’ve done a lot of kitchen learning lately.  We can’t neglect a photo that expresses the experience so perfectly:

Any time we’re in the kitchen, there’s Nephi.  And he practically shakes at the anticipation of fallen foodstuffs.  A slight blur of constant motion, he’s begging, showing off his big puppy dog eyes, or sniffing around for droppings.

I love my boys.  I love taking photos to see how they grow and change constantly.  They are the highlight of my life.  Next to photography, of course!
